Purpose and goals
The course /workshop introduces the students to the overall understanding of urban spaces as “public domain”. The objective is to give the student theoretical knowledge and skills in relation to the design of different kinds of public domain in the city. A special focus is put on the role of art in urban spaces. Furthermore the propose is to give the student a toolbox of methods for mapping and analysis of urban architectural spaces and the integrated transition of art and space into an “experience-scape”.
Starting from the semester theme ’EmotionScapes – Space & Technology’ this Sub-module will take its starting point in the transformation of Aalborg into an open minded city with a range of inviting public spaces based on a variation of programs providing all citizens (dwellers, commuters, visitors, old and young, male and female, immigrants and natives) interesting, provoking or unexpected experiences.
The stating point of the module is to ask the seemingly simple questions:
• Is it possible to transform an ordinary parking place for a couple of hours in such a way that it constructs a new urban situation?
• Can an art parking-place-installation transform the experience of the place?
• Can an instant installation give new meaning to the urban space /car park?
• And can it hold a role as catalyst for new human interactions – creating new public domains for a couple of hours?
During the workshop the students will be working with 12 different parking places in the same amount of car parks in Aalborg coming up with suggestions for a transformation of the lot to an ‘urban mini park’. The goal is to create connections between the parking place, and the urban space / car park it is located.
Furthermore the goal is to start a process of transforming boring transit areas or ‘non-places’ into places for human interactions, fun and play. The art installations shall challenge the human senses, feelings and individual reflections and create places with identity and new meaning.
