EVERY STORY TELLS A PICTURE
Cubo and art
This exhibition is about the interaction between art and architecture. And a perspective of the works of the Cubo studio as well as a perspective of Danish art from 1994 to the present. 11 pieces of architecture from the Cubo studio meet the art decoration of Malene Landgreen, Jørn Larsen, Maja Lisa Engelhardt, Per Petri, Viera Collaro, Erik A. Frandsen, John Olsen, and Troels Wörsel, including an industrial monument, an artistic strategy, and world perspective.
Background:
From the very first house drawn by Cubo in 1994, the Engholm Church in Allerød, art decoration has been integrated into several Cubo architectures. Since then, the studio has only found it natural to let art decoration become an increasingly integrated part of its architectural work.
The year is now 2012. In collaboration with the art museum KUNSTEN and the Utzon Center, Cubo has selected 11 interactions following the Engholm Church for this exhibition. ’Every Story Tells a Picture’ illustrates these interactions and opens the doors to the widely varied and branched out mesh of underlying reflections, work methods, processes, and considerations associated with the individual projects.
In the exhibition:
In 8 rooms the focus is on a series of partnerships: Malene Landgreen’s glass friezes versus Egå Gymnasium, Jørn Larsen’s black and white granite, John Olsen’s glass installation, and Troels Wörsel’s friezes, all versus the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Maja Lisa Engelhardt’s clay reliefs versus the Center for Sundhed og Træning in Skælskør, Per Petri’s landscape versus the Aagaard Fertility Clinic by Skejby, Viera Collaro’s light and sound installation versus det Rytmiske Hus Atlas in downtown Aarhus, and Erik A. Frandsen’s neon lamps versus Hejmdal, Kræftrådgivningens Hus, also in Aarhus, designed by Frank O. Gehry Partners, and projected by Cubo. Entirely different artists, entirely different decorations, entirely different houses. Every decoration is elaborated upon by the artist, who contributes preparatory work, sketches, parallel works, or new images. And each room features a video interview wherein the artist takes the central stage.
In the common room of the exhibition, 3 additional projects tell different stories:
The Hanstholm Museum Centre and Nordkraft in downtown Aalborg being two projects with no outright ornamentation, because the buildings themselves and their surroundings ARE art, and the new University Hospital in Aarhus – still on the drawingboard, but with an ambitious artistic strategy to pave the way for future art decoration in a town-sized construction project.
The exhibition is created in close collaboration with Cubo Architects, the art museum KUNSTEN, and the Utzon Center.
The exhibition is curated by architect and artist Per Petri.
With thanks to all collaborators, especially the 8 artists involved.
Cubo Architects A/S, KUNSTEN, and the Utzon Center.
Exhibition period: April 20th through June 24th, 2012
