Tribute to Joern Utzon

Jørn Utzon will be remembered as one of the world’s most outstandingly original and humane architects, who created Denmark’s best housing and the most iconic and popular building in the world, the Sydney Opera House, that has come to define not only a city, but the entire nation of Australia.

Jørn Utzon was a warm, humorous and modest man, with an acute perception of nature, a profound fascination with the many cultures of the world and a genius for creating timeless architecture, based on his understanding that always placed the human experience at its core. He has been a great personal inspiration to those that have known and worked with him and his architecture will continue to be a source of inspiration for generations to come

He is greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues and everyone who enjoys his buildings.

I am an Australian living in Oslo and wanted to register my sincere appreciation for the impact Mr Utzon's work & story has made upon me as a resident of Sydney for a large part of my life.

Beyond the Opera House his legacy speaks for itself.

It is a life well spent.

Med vennlig Hilsen / Kindest Regards / 以亲切的问候,

I was saddened to learn of Jørn Utzon’s death (there was an obituary in the New York Times today with a photo of him from 1967 and another of the Sydney Opera House).

I thought how perfect it was that you had managed to bring the Utzon Center into life just in time. I am personally  grateful that I was able to spend some time at the center (and to be able to exhibit in it). That hour in the lecture theater during my talk when the scudding clouds and periodically revealed sun outside was channeled beautifully into the space as shifting intensities of light, has stayed with me as a very specific memory of Jørn Utzon’s building.

With warm regards

I just came across the sad news of Jorn's passing away.

Condolences to you and to his family and friends.

He lived to an old enough age to be vindicated and celebrated the
world over, and that is no small accomplishment. I hope it brought his
family some satisfaction. Still, it's sad to know he's gone, and, with
him, a line that reached all the way back to Asplund. I must confess,
I had been looking forward to meeting him, and am truly disappointed
that that chance is now forever gone.

I suppose a new chapter begins for the Utzon Center. You must already
be making plans that. His legacy is in good hands. Good luck to you.

With best regards,

Marcos Novak
